The Newbury art collection has been carefully curated with contemporary artists who are shaping the art world with new technology and innovative techniques that have captured the eyes of the art world. Selected artists are diverse, including emerging and mid-career artists — painters, sculptors, photographers represented in museum collections including the ICA and the MFA in Boston. They are recipients of important arts fellowships, awards and media acclaim. Many have a connection to Boston and New England and they have used their craft to create a meaningful dialogue between viewer and object.

Our artists are experts in their studio practices and masters of the techniques and styles for which they are well known, often teaching, writing, curating, and mentoring others in addition to making their own artworks. The paintings, photographs, sculptures, and prints on view are masterfully executed formal responses to the natural and architectural circumstances that are the foundation of Boston’s history and to the new chapter that is The Newbury.

This project is among the first by the newly formed C + K Art Advisory, a partnership for curating, consulting, and a full site of related services from Mike Carroll and Lynne Kortenhaus.

About the Curators

Lynne Kortenhaus and Mike Carroll have more than three decades of experience working with clients and collectors to provide advice on acquiring, commissioning, collections management, public programming and appraisal of fine art. Lynne is a certified appraiser and began her career with Phillips Fine Art Auctioneers and Appraisers as its New England Regional Director. Before joining Phillips, she was the associate director of Arvest Galleries that specialized in 19th and 20th century works of art. She was recruited to reposition Haley & Steele, a 100 year print and framing gallery in Boston.  Lynne has assisted in advising and curating both private, corporate and institutional collections.  She established her own firm in 1984 to expand into marketing and communications with an eye toward art, design, architecture and lifestyle. Her first client was The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company where she created a collections management and marketing program throughout the company’s first 25 properties across America. She has since advised the parent company Host Hotels & Resorts on numerous evaluations of existing hotel art collections including Four Seasons, Hyatt and Marriott Hotels. A graduate of RISD, she is an accomplished artist herself. She sits on numerous non-profit boards including the Fine Arts Work Center where she is currently president; the Boston Center for the Arts, Director’s Circle of the ICA, director emeritus of The Boch Center.  She has served as Chair of the Boston Art Commission for the City of Boston under two different mayors.

Mike Carroll is a curator, gallerist, advisor, and producer in the world of fine art.  He attended Emerson College and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and was involved in Boston’s then thriving underground scene.  He ran live performances and the video section at The Boston Film Video Foundation when video was in its black and white reel infancy.  He opened his first gallery,  The 11th Hour in the early 1980’s where he produced exhibitions and events by members of The Boston School.

He was the executive director at Provincetown’s Schoolhouse Center from 1997-2004 and has since been the owner of the Schoolhouse Gallery since 2005 where he is well known for presenting the finest in contemporary art.  He works with industry professionals to curate and present fine art in professional spaces and advise on collections management. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Twenty Summers and sits on the Advisory Board of The Fine Arts Work Center. He writes and speaks on making, studio practices and exhibition spaces.
